Arla Acquires Scania Electric Truck For Stockholm City Deliveries

Swedish dairy giant adds new battery-electric vehicle to its green fleet for quieter, cleaner urban distribution.

In its efforts to drive the shift towards sustainable transport, Scania has often highlighted the value of cooperating with like-minded progressive businesses, in ‘smart partnerships’ that can create lasting positive change.

One such example is Swedish company Arla, whose own heavy transports in Sweden have been fossil-free since 2018. Now, the dairy giant’s long and productive relationship with Scania has been further strengthened, with the addition of a new battery-electric truck for Arla’s Stockholm city deliveries.

From early April, the electric distribution truck will make daily deliveries of Arla products from its city dairy to certain stores in Stockholm’s inner city. With three axles and battery power of 300kWh, the truck can drive quietly for up to 150 km on one charge, making it ideal for intensive urban assignments. Arla intends the acquisition of the new electric truck to help it fulfil its goal of contributing to better air quality and quieter transports in densely populated areas.

The first journey took place in the beginning of April, when the electric truck delivered products from Arla’s dairy in the Kallhäll area of Stockholm to an ICA Kvantum supermarket in nearby Kungsholmen. Scania joined representatives from Arla, ICA and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in greeting Stockholm City finance councillor Anna König Jerlmyr, who was on the short trip.

“The electrification of deliveries means a fantastic improvement in both noise level and air quality. It is also crucial for the transition to a greener society,” says Councillor König Jerlmyr.

“It is fun to see that Arla has a high level of ambition, just like Scania, when it comes to sustainability and reducing climate emissions,” adds Fredrik Lundström, Fleet Sales Manager at Scania Sweden.

“Scania is investing heavily in electrification. We’re building battery factories and developing test facilities. Within a year or so we will also offer electric trucks for heavier regional transports, as we continue to expand the transport options for electrification.”

Arla, like growing numbers of the Swedish business community, shares Scania’s desire to increase the tempo of transport electrification.

“To reach our goal of making Stockholm’s transport fossil-free, politics and business must work together. We would like to see more investment in the electricity networks to cope with an expanded charging infrastructure, and for public procurers to set basic requirements for fossil-free fuel to reward investment in electric transport,” says Helena Markstedt, Public Affairs Manager, Arla.
