Electrically-Powered Construction Equipment By Wirtgen

The requirements for protection against the various types of harmful emissions on urban construction sites are becoming tighter and tighter due to ongoing efforts to protect local residents, construction crews and, not least, historic buildings. The Wirtgen Group responded to these issues at an early stage of this development.

Today, we are able to offer our customers an electrically-powered range of formerly fossil-fuel-powered construction equipment for selected applications – which, in consequence, leads to lower noise levels, reduced vibration, less dust pollution and lower CO₂ emissions.

E-Power for local zero emissions in road construction and earthworks

With the models of the new E-Power Generation, the Wirtgen Group shows that zero-emission, environmentally friendly construction work and maximum productivity are not necessarily mutually exclusive. The battery-electric Mini Class road pavers from Vögele, battery-electric tandem rollers from Hamm and diesel-electric EVO line crushers from Kleemann are outstanding examples of sustainable and efficient product development and enable our customers to realise their projects more sustainably.

On the right track

Sustainable solutions and technologies are already firmly anchored in all corporate processes of the Wirtgen Group.

Electrically-powered rollers and pavers: the sustainable production system for urban construction sites

The perfect combination: together, the battery-electric tandem rollers of the HD CompactLine from Hamm and the battery-electric Mini Class road pavers from Vögele are the key elements of an ideal production system for small urban construction sites. They not only enable zero-emission construction work, but also increase the machine operator’s daily productivity by significantly reducing noise emissions.

Hamm offers a choice of eight battery-electric tandem roller models.

Hamm tandem rollers: Local zero emissions and low noise compaction

With eight battery-electric HD CompactLine tandem roller models, Hamm enables its customers around the world to perform low noise compaction with local zero-emissions. The maintenance-free Li-ion battery with a capacity of approx. 23 kWh is integrated in the machine and can be rapidly recharged with a fast charging process whenever necessary. A particular benefit: the drive system of the electrically-powered machine also delivers maximum performance without any loss of compaction quality.

Hamm also offers E-combination rollers with oscillation for working scenarios requiring particularly quiet compaction and lowest vibration levels. Their low vibration in operation considerably reduces the vibration load in the immediate working environment and thus prevents damage to nearby buildings and structures.

The advantages at a glance:

  • Purely electric drive, no local emissions
  • Maximum compaction performance
  • Maximum efficiency ensures high battery runtimes and long operating times
  • Enough energy for a typical working day
  • Reduced noise emissions
The battery-electric MINI 500e tracked paver and the battery-electric MINI 502e wheeled paver of the Vögele Mini Class are the ideal choice for paving projects in urban settings.

Vögele Mini Class-road pavers: Emission-free, low-noise asphalt paving.

The two battery-electric Mini Class road pavers from Vögele are the ideal choice for small construction projects and the paving of small areas in urban settings. They offer local zero emissions and low noise levels, both of which are essential factors when bidding for construction projects with particularly stringent emissions regulations, for instance in historic city centres. The MINI 500e tracked paver and the MINI 502e wheeled paver are ideal for working in the tightest spaces and, thanks to a particularly narrow turning circle, can be used in all situations that previously excluded the use of a mechanical version, especially in the construction of paths and drainage channels.

The advantages of E-Power Mini-Class pavers:

  • Emission-free, low-noise asphalt paving
  • Ideal for applications in sensitive inner city scenarios
  • Powered by a high-capacity 22.8 kW lithium-ion battery
  • Up to 16 hours of paving

Fast charging times

The electrically-powered Hamm rollers and Vögele pavers can be recharged overnight from a standard mains power socket and are fully charged and ready to go the next morning.

Local zero emission operation of Kleemann crushing plants

Noise and dust reduction is also a requirement for mobile crushing plants. Alongside solutions for the reduction of noise emission levels and effective dust mitigation by water spraying, it is above all the E-DRIVE diesel-electric drive concept that ensures environmentally friendly crushing operations and fuel economy. Here, the drive concept offers the choice of either 100% electric or diesel-electric operation.

The Pro Line crushing plants are equipped with an efficient diesel-electric drive system. Whether E-DRIVE is used must always be considered on a case-by-case basis. Fully-electric drive requires an external electrical power supply at the crushing site – if this is not available the low-consumption diesel engine can take over as the main source of power. It then drives a generator that supplies the electricity required by the plant’s crushing unit and conveyor belts. Both of these cases guarantee environmentally friendly operation and low fuel consumption.

Details of the charging infrastructure

Future construction sites on which numerous battery-electric-powered machines are in use require an appropriately dimensioned charging infrastructure. That’s why we are, in cooperation with our parent company John Deere, committed to delivering flexible charging solutions.
