The Middle East and Saudi Arabia are experiencing a boom in the construction business, which has seen significant advancements in the last three years. For over forty years, Saleh Abdulaziz Al Rashed & Sons (SAR) has been in the construction sector, offering the full range of services to the clientele. Plant & Equipment takes a closer look at SAR’s product manufacturing processes. The Saudi government’s investments in the construction industry have surged in the last couple of years. Infrastructure projects where the country has spent most on are transportation, healthcare, and tourism all driven by the Vision 2030 initiative. Elsewhere, in the Middle East region, countries like the UAE, Qatar, and Iraq have also continued to invest in major construction projects such as stadiums, hotels, and commercial complexes. To adapt to these changes in demand and progress in the construction market, company operations at SAR have evolved to align with industry trends. Over the last four decades, SAR has progressed from owning a single quarry on Al Kharj Road in Riyadh to today specializing in producing aggregates (a natural gravel material used in various applications), owning multiple manufacturing facilities, and having clients all over the Middle East region. The company operates in multiple sectors, including crushing and screening solutions, mining, graded aggregate production, asphalt paving, manufacturing, spare parts, and transportation. SAR ranks among the top crushing and screening solutions provider and suppliers of aggregates for major projects under the Saudi Vision 2030. It has offered aggregates for projects in the Eastern Region, Ras Al-Khair and Jafurah field port. Products in demand The most sought-after items produced by Saleh Abdulaziz Al Rashed & Sons include crushed stone, asphalt, crusher plants, and replacement parts. These are utilized in the building and infrastructure sectors and are crucial for the development of infrastructure across a range of industries, including the construction of buildings and roads. Crushed stone is used for road base projects, while asphalt is crucial for paving roads and parking lots. Crusher plants play a key role in producing aggregates for construction projects, and spare parts are critical for maintaining the machinery and equipment used in these sectors. With all the current and upcoming construction projects in Saudi Arabia, the market for aggregates is experiencing significant changes and growth. This presents opportunities for SAR to meet the escalating demand for aggregates and associated products in the construction market. Manufacturing facility SAR manufactures a variety of materials handling equipment and components in its Riyadh manufacturing facilities, including movable conveyor belts, conveyor systems, and steel structural products including flatbed trailers, dump trucks, water and diesel tanks, and silos for storage. “Additionally, we supply crusher spare parts such as crusher liners, jaw plates, and impact bars that are used in the maintenance and repair of crushing equipment,” says Firas Najem, Marketing Manager at SAR. The demand for these spare parts and materials handling equipment is significant in the construction and mining industries. “Our manufacturing facilities are equipped to meet this demand and provide the necessary products to support the construction and mining industries in Saudi Arabia,” he says. Asphalt mixers “The asphalt plant operated by our company is primarily used for the construction industry, specifically in road construction and maintenance projects,” continues Najem. Asphalt plants are essential to the production of asphalt mix, which is a vital component of highway construction. The liquid asphalt binder and aggregates—such as sand and crushed stone—combine to form the asphalt mix, which is heated and mixed to produce the hot-mix asphalt used in road projects. The operation of an asphalt plant involves several key steps:
  1. Handling of Aggregates: At the plant, aggregates, such as sand and crushed stone, are kept in silos or special storage bins.
  2. Drying and Heating: To eliminate moisture and attain the proper temperature for mixing with the asphalt binder, the aggregates are put into a revolving drum and dried and heated.
  3. Asphalt Mixing: To produce an asphalt mix, heated aggregates and liquid asphalt binder are combined in a mixing chamber.
  4. Storage and Loading: Until it is ready to be loaded into trucks and driven to a constructing site, hot-mix asphalt is kept in silos or storage tanks at the plant.
Logistics “Our logistics system for the sales of aggregates and asphalt materials is designed to ensure efficient and timely delivery of products to our customers. We have a well-organized and streamlined process in place to manage the transportation and distribution of aggregates and asphalt materials to various construction sites and projects,” adds Najem. SAR’s logistics system has several key components that ensure a seamless experience. These include fleet management, route planning, timely delivery, safety measures and communication. SAR maintains a fleet of more than 365 trucks and vehicles equipped to transport aggregates and asphalt materials safely and efficiently. The company’s logistics team plans the most cost-effective and efficient routes for delivery, taking into consideration factors such as traffic conditions, distance to the construction site, and customer requirements. SAR’s team works closely with customers to coordinate delivery schedules and provide updates on the status of their orders at all times. The company trains its drivers in proper handling and transportation procedures to prevent accidents and ensure product integrity. “Overall, our logistics system is designed to optimize the sales and distribution of aggregates and asphalt materials,” adds Najem.
