The Tanzanian island of Zanzibar is to be the site of a 70-storey spiral-shaped building that will be the tallest in Africa after Egypt’s Iconic Tower. The $1.3bn Zanzibar Domino Commercial Tower is being developed on an artificial island by Tanzania’s AICL Group and Edinburgh-based investment company Crowland Management. The 370,000sqm mixed-use development is composed of 360 dominos curled around a yachting marina. It will contain 560 residential apartments and two luxury hotels.


SOUTH AFRICA

Vantage Data Centres, a large, US-headquartered data centre specialist, has announced it has earmarked R15-billion to build what it claims will be the largest data centre campus in Africa. The Johannesburg campus will consist of three facilities across 30 acres. The first phase of the campus, scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2022, will include a 16MW building. The carrier-neutral Johannesburg campus will include 60,000sqm of data space across three facilities once fully developed, making it the largest on the continent.


EGYPT

Project: 500MW Wind Farm

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with AMEA Power. The PPA has been signed for supply of 500MW wind power that will increase renewable energy in Egypt. Amea Power will construct the wind farm in Jabal Al-Zayt, in the town of Ras Ghareb in the Gulf of Suez. The project will be carried out by Amunet Wind Power Company (AWPC), a subsidiary of Amea Power. The wind power project will be built at a cost of USD 550m and generate 500MW energy. The wind power project is to be completed in 2023.


EGYPT

Project: Hilton Nile Towers

Hilton Nile Towers consists of two towers directly overlooking the Nile, one of them is a luxury residential building and the other is a 5-star hotel managed by Hilton International. It is built on an area of 45,500sqm in Maadi district. The residential tower comprises 190 units. The hotel tower comprises 256 rooms, in addition to restaurants and entertainment halls, with an investment cost of EGP3.8bn. The project is scheduled to be delivered in Q1 of 2022.


SWAZILAND

Project: Solar Battery Project

Australian-German outfit Frazer Solar has signed a binding contract with the Government of Eswatini (Swaziland) for a 100MW solar battery project, which will be the largest project of its kind in Africa. It will supply energy to countries within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The project will consist of 75,000 solar panels covering 45 hectares on a total 54-hectare site. The Mega Solar-Storage system will help to reduce load shedding in South Africa and SADC by providing much needed power at peak times. The term of the contract is 40 years.

CAMEROON

Project: New Line at Figuil Cement Plant

Cimenteries du Cameroun has begun building a new $88.4m 0.5Mt/yr line at its 0.15Mt/yr Figuil cement plant. The new line is scheduled for commissioning in October 2023. It will have an additional clinker capacity of 0.1Mt/yr. When commissioned, the expanded plant will serve northern Cameroon, Chad and the Central African Republic, and bring the company’s total cement capacity to 2.5Mt/yr.


GHANA

Assin Praso-Assin Fosu Road construction works in Ghana are expected to be completed in November 2023. The contract for the project was awarded to Shimizu Dia-Nippon Joint Ventures. The project involves the rehabilitation of the Assin Praso-Assin Fosu Road, the dualization into a 4-lane carriageway of a 1.2km Assin Fosu township road network, the reconstruction of the railway underpass bridge, and the reconstruction of drainage structures between Assin Fosu and Assin Praso to about 2,400m U-shaped vertical drainage systems.

It also involves five-road crossing drainage in five locations and a New Jersey type center median dualized section with bus stops, steps, street lighting, and traffic safety devices with asphaltic concrete pavements.


EGYPT

Project: Rayan Tower in the New Administrative Capital

Egypt’s Khaled Sabry Holding Real Estate Development Company has announced its second commercial project in the New Administrative Capital (NAC), after the $32m Ronza Tower. The developer has launched $48m Rayan Tower, spread over an area of more than 3,000sqm, in NAC’s Central Business District. The 14-storey tower has been designed by Hafez Consultants. The tower will house medical, office, retail, and hotel units. Construction will start by the third quarter of 2022 with delivery scheduled in four phases by end-2025.
